Ports Development in the Euro-Mediterranean (seminar)

Summary:

This seminar, organised by Ubifrance, the French Agency for the international development of companies, was held on 7 and 8 July 2005 in Marseilles, France.

The first day outlined the strategic influence of maritime transport for trade and economic development in the Mediterranean area, by examining the main challenges facing maritime transport in the area and by presenting some of the main port development projects on both sides of the Mediterranean. A panel discussion examined the issue of whether such projects are likely to lead to a change of rules in the Mediterranean area.

The afternoon session showcased a number of projects relevant at the EU and MEDA level, such as the development of multimodal links, in particular through the ‘motorways of the sea’ and the Marco Polo II programme, and other regional projects in the Maghreb and Mashreq. During this session, Ralf Kaltheier, Project Director, Euromed Transport Project, gave a presentation on the main road and rail regional projects in Syria and Jordan (see below).

The first day was rounded off by a series of presentations on ports management policy and the role of foreign companies in the development of infrastructures and logistics in MEDA countries. The main conclusions of the seminar regarding maritime transport projects in the perspective of the Euro-Med free trade area planned for 2010 were summarised by Mr Barrot.

The second day was devoted to a technical visit of the Euro-Mediterranean area of the Port of Marseilles and to individual meetings with the commercial attachés of various Mediterranean countries.
