Summary:The Second Mediterranean Logistics and Transport Forum was organised in Barcelona, on 25-26 May 2004, by the Free Port of Barcelona, the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce and the Association of Mediterranean Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ASCAME) in the framework of the International Logistics Show. The Forum is intended to act as an annual platform for specialists and business persons for discussing issues of interest and new policies in the logistics and transport sector in the Mediterranean.
Over 80 participants attended the 2004 edition of forum, including national ministries, regional government bodies and international organisations, chambers of commerce and other trade organisations, as well as many private sectors companies from the transport and logistics sector. Among the high-level figures present at the event were Loyola de Palacio, European Commissioner for Energy and Transport, as well as Ministers for Transport from several Mediterranean countries.
Two main points were addressed during the forum: - The first day's plenary meeting centred on the prospects for the transport and freight sector at the 2010 horizon and the challenges faced by the 'Mediterranean logistics community';
- The second day's plenary session examined the role of maritime transport and ports in supporting the establishment of the Euro-Mediterranean Free Trade Area.
Alongside these debates, on both days, the forum also provided strong opportunities for contacts and exchanges during special workshops and business meetings sessions.
This year the forum gave special attention the extension of the trans-European Transport Network and its links with the transport networks in southern Mediterranean countries. The Euro-Med Transport Project was therefore clearly one of the key focal points of the forum. Ralf-Michael Kaltheier, Project Manager, was present at the forum and gave an in-depth presentation of the project during the session on international projects and initiatives, including European Commission programmes (MEDA, Marco Polo, Galileo, etc.) as well as projects funded by the European Investment Bank, the United Nations and the World Bank.
