Euromed Transport Forum 5

Summary:

The fifth meeting of the Euro-Mediterranean Transport Forum was held in Brussels on 21 and 22 December 2004, at the level of high officials for transport from the MEDA countries and the EU Member States, and EC officials.

The members of the Forum examined the current status and results of the Euromed Transport Project, mainly through its Diagnostic Study which was presented on this occasion.

The participants also discussed the activities to be carried out by the project during 2005 and beyond in areas covered by the Neighbourhood Action Plans and in relation to other projects (GNSS and Safemed projects, INCO-MED, Destin, REG-MED, MEDA TEN-T, etc.).

On the policy side, the participants also raised the possibility of holding the first Euro-Mediterranean Ministerial Conference on Transport in late 2005 and welcomed the European Commission proposal to present a strategic document containing a diagnostic of the Mediterranean transport system and a regional policy with a long-term perspective.

The members of the Forum also discussed ways to coordinate the activities of the Euromed Transport Programme with the work of the High-Level Group on the extension of the trans-European network to the EU’s neighbouring countries.
